“Significant supply challenges and widening supply gap issues in the very near future." Says Cameco CEO

At an investor conference on Tuesday, (covered by the Canadian Press) Tim Gitzel, Chief Exec of Cameco, issued a clear warning of an impending uranium supply squeeze. "Fukushima or no Fukushima, the world energy situation remains unchanged. Huge quantities of huge, reliable and affordable electricity will be needed to meet future demand."

Global demand for electricity has tripled since the 1980s and expected to double again in the next two decades yet while uranium demand hit 165 million pounds in 2011, only 143 million pounds was produced. The shortfall has in the past been made up from the HEU agreement with Russia – an agreement that will shortly come to an end, thus placing more pressure on production. As Gitzel is quoted in yesterday’s article on the conference, this “raises the big question: where is this production going to come from?"

The Canadian Press article takes a balanced view and duly notes the Fukushima event which prompted Germany’s decision to shut down its reactors (though it recently had to restart some of them during the winter freeze). However, it places Fukushima into context and the undisputed fact is that uranium demand already outstrips mine production and demand can only grow as India, China, South Korea and even countries like the US pursue their plans for new reactors.

This is a problem because, as Gitzel points out, "Uranium mines in general are difficult to bring on at the best of times and now, with the lower uranium prices, we're seeing (that) delays and cancellations of projects are becoming the norm as proponents are unable to meet feasibility tests. As a result, we believe that the industry could face significant supply challenges and widening supply gap issues in the very near future."

India’s plans a 1400% increase in nuclear power capacity

That’s right… a fourteen fold increase in capacity. India’s power minister yesterday made a clear statement of the country’s plans for nuclear power over the next 20 years and however you look at it, they are significant.

With six reactors already under construction and 17 planned, not to mention an additional 40 proposed, India is second only to China in terms of new builds.

India’s goal is to upgrade its nuclear power capacity from 4,400 MW (currently generated from 20 reactors) to a phenomenal 63,000 MW which will in turn place corresponding demands on uranium supply.

Fission increases PLS property claim by more than 25%; investigates potential extension to high grade discovery made in 2011

If you missed the press release last week, we’ve increased the size of our Paterson Lake South (PLS) property by staking, six new claims onto the southern part of our project area.  We will be investigating possible southern extensions of the large high-grade uranium boulder field we discovered on the property in June 2011.

Most people familiar with Fission know us for our Waterbury Lake and Patterson Lake South properties (both associated with  Canada’s Athabasca Basin).  Each of these properties contains significant high grade uranium discoveries and, in the case of Waterbury Lake, is adjacent to the Hathor Midwest Northeast property which in turn was recently the target of a hostile takeover battle between Rio Tinto and Cameco.

Nuclear Energy on the Rise: Anglo-French nuclear energy agreement expected to deliver commercial deals worth over £500m

If you missed Friday's news, the UK and France annouced a new nulear energy cooperation agreement - something that highlights the sustained growth of nuclear energy. In fact, in the words of the UK government today, it sets out a “shared long term vision of safe, secure, sustainable and affordable energy, that supports growth and helps to deliver our emission reductions targets."

This sort of statement makes it clear that governments view nuclear energy as a preferred source of low cost, long term and sustainable energy and it’s backed up with a commitment that will deliver significant commercial contracts.

The announcement also comes just one week after the US decided to build its first two new nuclear power stations in 30 years and Canada and China signed a uranium export agreement.

Nuclear Energy isn’t going anywhere except forward

Germany restarts nuclear reactors; the US gives the okay for the first new nuclear power plants in 30 years; Canada announces uranium export deal with China. Three news items from a few days back (Feb 9th), highlighting that nuclear energy is not just a necessity, but a growing necessity as the world’s demand for power expands.

Let’s look at a couple of those news items separately. The US has not built a nuclear power station in 30 years. Now this decision to allow new construction falls in line with research conducted by the World Nuclear Association which reports that by 2030, 156 reactors will have closed but 298 new reactors will have come online. That’s a net growth of 142 new reactors online over the next 18 years.

As for the uranium export announcement? Well it is not a coincidence that the world’s largest nation (China) has made a new uranium agreement with Canada. The reality is that Canada’s Athabasca Basin is the source of the world’s highest uranium grades and last year supplied around 20% of the world’s uranium. As we all know in the mining industry, grade is king, and uranium is no exception.

Why is there so much interest in the Athabasca Basin?

The Athabasca Basin has a grade average of over ten times the world average; world-leading infrastructure and technologically advanced mills; a political environment that is pro-mining and one of the most stable in the world.

The Athabasca Basin in Canada has a 40+ year history of unconformity uranium discoveries and production and, with an average grade of more than ten times the world average, it’s not surprising that in 2011 the region was the source of nearly 20% of world uranium production (approx. 125 million lbs U308).

Going into more detail, the world average grade for Uranium deposits is about 0.2% U3O8 and while the grade average for the Basin is more than 2.0%. When you also consider that the Basin’s largest two deposits – Cigar Lake and McArther River – have average grades of more than 17% and 15% respectively, it’s obvious why three of the five world’s largest uranium producers are active in the Athabasca Basin.

When evaluating the Athabasca Basin you also have to bear in mind the physical and economic infrastructure. The region has benefited from massive infrastructure investment over the years. For instance, there are several high-capacity mills located in the Eastern Basin - just a few KMs from the airport and the provincial highway. In fact, the JEB mill has been reported as the most technologically advanced uranium mill in the world and the only one capable of processing high-grade uranium ore without diluting it.

There is also a highly experienced workforce that includes third generation professional miners. All of this means that the costs and time involved for both discovery and production are lower compared to regions that do not have such a mature set-up.

My final comment relates to the political environment. A stable government and uranium-mining friendly political attitude is a benefit that cannot be overstated when it comes to long-term, successful mining activity. With such an environment in place, there are low political and permitting risks associated with the region.
